2008 Recap

The 2008 76 CLASSIC field included eight teams: Arizona State, Baylor, Cal State Fullerton, Charlotte, Providence, St. Mary’s, UTEP and eventual champs Wake Forest, which eclipsed Baylor in a thriller. The 11 other games were equally exciting. Here’s how everyone did:

Arizona State University
Nickname: Sun Devils
Conference: Pac-10
Location: Tempe, AZ

The Sun Devils claimed third place in the 76 Classic behind James Harden’s tournament-record and career-high 40 points and eight rebounds in an 88-58 win over Texas El Paso. “James had a remarkable game,” said Arizona State coach Herb Sendek. “It was mesmerizing to watch.” In the team’s second-round game, Harden first set a tourney record with 32 points in an 87-78 loss to Baylor. Jeff Pendergraph added 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Sun Devils beat Charlotte, 84-56, in the opening round thanks to Pendergraph’s 23 points and 10 rebounds, and 15 by Harden.

Baylor University
Nickname: Bears
Conference: Big 12
Location: Waco, TX

Unranked Baylor shook up the 76 Classic by reaching the title game, before losing to No. 24 Wake Forest, 87-74. The Bears led at halftime, 31-30, but the team shot just 32.4 percent from the field in the game. Henry Dugat led the way with 19 points and Curtis Jerrells had 16. The Bears reached the championship behind LaceDarius Dunn’s 27 points and 22 by Jerrells in an 87-78 win over No. 14 Arizona State. The win gave 6-0 Baylor its best start since going 12-0 in 2000-01. They beat Providence, 72-56, in the opening round, with Kevin Rogers collecting 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Cal State Fullerton
Nickname: Titans
Conference: Big West
Location: Fullerton, CA

Josh Akognon struck for 26 points to lead Cal-State Fullerton to a 92-84 overtime victory over Charlotte for seventh place. Marcio Lassiter had 13 points and Papa Guisse grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. The Titans fell to St. Mary’s, 79-54, in a second-round game as Akognon had 24 points and Lassiter added 12. The team shot just 34.5 percent from the field. They gave eventual tourney champ Wake Forest a run in the first round before losing, 75-69. Akognon scored 24 and Gerald Henderson finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Charlotte
Nickname: 49ers
Conference: Atlantic 10
Location: Charlotte, NC

Charlotte may have finished eighth, but the 49ers finished strong in regulation of its 92-84 overtime loss to Cal State Fullerton, rallying from 12 down to force OT. DiJuan Harris and Ian Andersen each scored 15 points in the defeat. The 49ers fell to Arizona State in the opening round, 84-56. Reserve RaShad Coleman had 14 points and Charlie Coley had 11 rebounds. They also lost to Providence, 67-62, after leading by 10 at halftime. Coleman scored 19, while Harris collected 10 assists.

Providence College
Nickname: Friars
Conference: BIG EAST
Location: Providence, RI

Providence took sixth place after a furious second-half rally fell just short in an 81-75 loss to St. Mary’s. The Friars trailed by 20 at halftime, but closed to within six with five minutes left. Jonathan Kale had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Weyinmi Efejuku added 11. Providence’s third game was similar to its second, as the team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit, but this time came away with a 67-62 win over Charlotte. Efjejuku, Kale, and Marshon Brooks each scored 12, as the Friars scored the game’s final five points. The team dropped its opening-round game to Baylor, 72-56. Efejuku (16 points, 8 rebounds) led three 10-point scorers: Brooks, Kale, and Jeff Xavier.

St. Mary’s College
Nickname: Gaels
Conference: West Coast
Location: Northern California

Patty Mills had a strong tournament as St. Mary’s took fourth place with an 81-75 victory over Providence. Mills scored 24, while Diamon Simpson had 18 and Omar Samhan totaled 16 points and eight rebounds. Mills led the Gaels to a second-round 79-54 win over Cal-State Fullerton with 21 points and six assists, as Simpson (12 points, 17 rebounds) and Samhan (14, 14) pitched in. St. Mary’s dropped its tourney opener, 75-62, to UTEP, despite 20 points, 14 rebounds, and three steals from Samhan. Mills finished with 16.

University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP)
Nickname: Miners
Conference: USA
Location: El Paso, TX

Texas El Paso finished fifth in the 76 Classic following an 88-58 loss to Arizona State, despite Randy Culpepper’s 24 points and Stefon Jackson’s 13. In the Miners’ second game, they almost upset Wake Forest, before losing in the final minute, 82-79. Jackson finished with 31 points, Culpepper had 15, and Arnett Moultrie collected 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. The Miners surprised a strong St. Mary’s team in their tourney opener, winning, 75-62, thanks to Culpepper’s 20 points and Jackson’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. UTEP took control in the first half, grabbing a 40-27 halftime lead.

Wake Forest University
Nickname: Demon Deacons
Conference: ACC
Location: Winston-Salem, NC

Wake Forest won the 76 Classic championship by rallying from a 31-30 first-half deficit to pull away from Baylor, 87-74. L.D. Williams finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeff Teague had 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. “I thought we played incredibly hard, with a lot of energy and a lot of emotion,” said Demon Deacons coach Dino Gaudio. Wake won a second-round nail-biter, 82-79 over UTEP, thanks to two late free throws by Teague, who finished with 29 points. James Johnson scored 18 and Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 points and eight rebounds. Wake’s starters—scoring all but 10 points—carried the team to a 75-69 opening-round win over Cal-State Fullerton. Teague finished with 24, while Aminu and Chas McFarland each had 14.
